When the PV modules are generating electricity, the diode allows the current to flow from the module through the connector and into the rest of the PV system. However, if the current tries to flow in the opposite direction (e.g., due to a voltage difference between the PV module and the rest of the system), the diode blocks the current and protects the PV module from damage.
