A solar rapid shutdown device is a device installed on a photovoltaic (PV) system that quickly disconnects the PV array from the electrical grid in the event of an emergency, such as a fire or natural disaster. This allows first responders to safely access the area around the PV system without the risk of electrical shock. Rapid shutdown devices must meet the requirements of the National Electric Code (NEC) section 690.12, which requires that PV systems be shut down within 10 seconds of a fire or other emergency. This is done by using a switch and/or circuit breaker that can be activated remotely or automatically in response to a signal from a fire alarm or other emergency system.
